2 dead, 19 injured after the Mexican Navy sailboat crashes against the Brooklyn bridge, says the mayor

A Mexican sailboat of the Navy with 277 people on board crashed into the Brooklyn bridge on Saturday night, killing two people and hurting more than a dozen others who were on board in a dramatic scene along the coast of New York City, according to the authorities.
The accident occurred at 8:30 pm, which resulted in at least 19 people injured, according to the New York Police Department. Four people were left with serious injuries, according to city officials, who gave a press conference on Saturday night.
Mayor Eric Adams said Sunday morning that two people were dead after the accident. Two others remained in critical condition, he said in a statement published on social networks.

The captain, who was maneuvering the ship, lost energy and mechanical function, and the current one “caused the ship to enter directly to the pillar of the bridge, hitting the mass of the ship where there were a couple of sailors,” said New York police chief Wilson Aramboles during information about the press.
The sailors were injured as a result of the dough hitting the bridge, according to Aramboles.
Numerous cell phone videos of the nearby spectators captured at the time the maps of the ship, decorated with lights, collided with the lower part of the Brooklyn bridge. The members of the ship’s crew were seen hanging from the masts after the collision.

No one fell into the water, according to the officials. The authorities said they did not believe that the bridge suffered any structural damage. Since then, the bridge has reopened traffic, said Adams just after midnight, adding that “we can confirm that the bridge did not suffer damage” after a preliminary inspection.
“We are praying for all on board and their families and we are grateful to our first to answer that they quickly jumped to action, ensuring that this accident was not much worse,” he said.

The ship was disembarking from Pier 17 and headed to Iceland, authorities said.
The National Transportation Board is on the site and will begin its investigation, but the preliminary information shows that it was probably a mechanical problem with the sailboat, according to the officials.

The Brooklyn bridge had temporarily closed after the accident, but since then it has reopened, according to the New York City Transportation Department.
“While inspections will remain ongoing, there are no signs of structural damage to Brooklyn bridge,” Nydot said in a statement.
